Here’s a simple infographic I made that details the evolution of mobile wallets/iBeacons/Passbook from 2011 to the present. Just like debit cards (and credit cards for that matter), it starts pretty slowly and then really begins to pick up steam. According to one study, more than half the Top 100 Retailers will have iBeacons in at least one-third of their stores by next year.
